Another difficult factor here is that to really implement these programs effectively you would need to interfere with these countries' sovereignty, since most of them would see your assistance (at least if implemented on this widespread and pervasive a level) as supplanting the purposes of the local government, so a lot of negotiation would need to take place.

Precisely.  Many people still follow the primitive evil version of the golden rule.  Do unto others as you want done to you.  But people, as they should, want different things.  You've got to find out what they want, first, then simply help them get that, not what we want them to have.

And when I say "what they want", I’m not talking about their primitive leaders.  I’m talking about everyone, first and foremost all the little and minority people.  If you can truly manage and verifiably know that, everything else should be a completely trivial no brainer.  As these powerful numbers clearly show, we have the resources to do most anything we want.  The only problem is, we don't know what that is, and we leave it up to the primitive leaders to try and use the rest of us to fight their wars, to get what they think the rest of us want for everyone.

No government would have any power, especially to fight wars, if you could reliably and easily show that the people wanted something different.

As it should be, knowing what people want is where all the power and authority is.

That sounds like D&C 121, Brent.

    Re: The Perpetual Education Fund

In the last 50 years, almost 400 million people worldwide have died from hunger and poor sanitation, according to the report. That's three times the number of people killed in all wars fought in the entire 20th century.

    Re: The Perpetual Education Fund

Last week, I accompanied our Young Men and Young Women to Youth Conference in Salt Lake City. We spent part of Wednesday morning helping at the LDS Humanitarian Aid Center out near the airport, putting together school kits and medical kits. We took a tour that included a video presentation of the massive need worldwide and what the LDS Church is doing to help. It made a tremendous impression on me. This is an area where, despite the political challenges, it seems that technology can help immensely. It might make a good roundtable topic as well as putting together some MTA-driven efforts in this regard. Maybe the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ( http://www.gatesfoundation.org ) would be a good candidate for some of our efforts?

    Re: The Perpetual Education Fund

The MTA board of directors has discussed the possibility of some day attempting to manage a prize fund for humanitarian technology.

Yes, that's a good idea; maybe there are other approaches that might not be "some day"... Smile [:)]
