    Kathryn quoted Carl Sagan:

"Every thinking person fears nuclear war, and every technological nation plans for it. Everyone knows it's madness, and every country has an excuse."
    >>

I quote (possibly?) Air Force General Curtis LeMay:

    "Peace through strength!"

When will human beings ever learn to trust each other? lol  Tribalism is so deeply rooted in us as a race.  It is in fact my very misgivings about human nature that makes me realize we must have a strong nuclear and conventional warfare deterrant.  Bullies and killers (whether an individual or an entire nation) generally only respect strength and the potential of another to hurt or slay them.

But I do believe we need cultural exchanges, open dialogues, peace talks, economic ties, etc., to connect with each other's humanity, or else eventually massively unrestrained violence at the nuclear (or nanotech, biowarfare, etc.) level may erupt.

I don't want humanity colonizing the galaxy while we are still so divided.  A repeat of the 15th, 16th and 17th century (the age of exploration and colonization write large in space) might not be such a good thing...

"How can it be that mathematics, being after all a product of human thought which is independent of experience, is so admirably appropriate to the objects of reality? Is human reason, then, without experience, merely by taking thought able to fathom the properties of real things?"

is absolutely touch and go. Each one of us could make the difference."

"We should be in the forefront of learning in all fields, for revelation does not come only through the prophet of God nor only directly from heaven in visions or dreams. Revelation may come in the laboratory, out of the test tube, out of the thinking mind and the inquiring soul, out of search and research and prayer and inspiration."

"Many people are going to learn the principles of democracy, the dictates of truth, and the teachings of science. Superstition must go. Let them worship as they will, every man can follow his own conscience provided it does not interfere with sane reason or bid him act against the liberty of his fellow men."

    -Mustafa Kemal Atakurk

I thought this quote was pretty cool about the connection between science and Mormonism.

Re: Thoughtful Quote of the Day

I long have been impressed with the truth that meaningful prayer requires both holy communication and consecrated work. Blessings require some effort on our part before we can obtain them, and prayer, as “a form of work, . . . is an appointed means for obtaining the highest of all blessings” (Bible Dictionary, “Prayer,” 753). We press forward and persevere in the consecrated work of prayer, after we say “amen,” by acting upon the things we have expressed to Heavenly Father.

Re: Thoughtful Quote of the Day

Let the Saints remember that great things depend on their individual exertion, and that they are called to be co-workers with us and the Holy Spirit in accomplishing the great work of the last days; and in consideration of the extent, the blessings and glories of the same, let every selfish feeling be not only buried, but annihilated; and let love to God and man predominate, and reign triumphant in every mind, that their hearts may become like unto Enoch’s of old, and comprehend all things, present, past and future, and come behind in no gift, waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ
